A ranking policeman who jumped to the help of a fellow officer that was assaulted by a knifeman has been awarded the Royal Recognition for Courage.

Sergeant Tim Ansell grappled with twenty-seven-year-old Jacob Brown following he held a knife to the neck of his colleague Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown initiated the assault as the law enforcement personnel and their partner, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist after a road collision in Whalley Range in July 2023.

Brown attacked with blade both Sergeant Ansell and Sergeant Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft stunned him with a electric weapon.

"Policeman stabbed," PC Wolstencroft was heard to say over his radio.

Officer-mounted and dashcam video released by the agency revealed Brown, who was dressed in black with a hood covering head, approach to Sgt Foster from behind with a knife outstretched.

He struck the policeman who tripped and fell to the ground, after which Sergeant Ansell stepped in and tried to wrestle him to the pavement although being multiple times hit with the weapon.

PC Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and awaited a clear shot, concluding the confrontation to an finish.

Sergeant Ansell was heard stating: "I need help on my throat here, I'm bleeding in the neck."

Sgt Ansell suffered multiple deep cuts to his throat and more wounds to his arms and body, while Sgt Foster suffered slash wounds.

Officials stated Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stop his fellow officer's blood loss before paramedics came.

The new recognition comes subsequent to the trio of policemen were granted departmental Courage Honors in October 2023 and the police federation award from the regional Police Federation in early 2024.

They additionally received a Area Bravery Award in mid-2024.
