Substantial Internet Disruption Impacts Numerous Online Platforms and Apps

An extensive web disruption has affected many websites and mobile apps globally, with users noting troubles connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting platform.

The impacted apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-managed services such as its key e-commerce platform and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.

Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with also reports of difficulties using the HMRC site on that morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring device owners turned to online platforms to report their home gadgets were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, reports of problems on specific platforms ran into the thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the problem began in the eastern region of the United States at AWS, a section that supplies crucial internet infrastructure for numerous businesses, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive online services service.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), the company announced “higher failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the US. The cascading impact was seen to hit apps worldwide, and the problem monitoring service showing outages with the identical platforms in multiple continents.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks web disruptions, further indicated a surge in outages on that morning, including several cases found in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the outage began.
