The US-based enterprise Waymo has announced that its autonomous taxis will be on offer for booking on London's streets beginning next year.

UK Capital Named as First European City for Autonomous Taxi Service.

The UK capital will emerge as the pioneering European city to introduce an autonomous taxi service, similar to those currently operational in San Francisco and four other American urban centers utilizing Waymo's cutting-edge platform.

Initial Trials to Commence with Human Specialists.

Waymo announced that its fleet are now traveling to London and will commence driving on the city's roads in the near future with experienced operators in control.

The company – originally formed as a derivative from the tech giant's self-driving car project and part of the larger corporate umbrella – stated it would expand services and work closely with the government transport body and Transport for London to obtain the required permissions to deliver completely driverless rides by 2026.

Growing Interest in Autonomous Transport Across London.

Other firms, including Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have likewise revealed their own strategies to trial self-driving cabs in the capital next year.

This is in response to the British government confirming it would speed up regulations enabling real-world tests to occur before laws enabling driverless transport becomes law in full.

A broader introduction of self-driving taxis is anticipated in the UK after the related legislation fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo currently has connections to the UK after opening its pioneering European technical center in Oxford in 2019.

Waymo began its autonomous cabs in 2020 and now reports it has carried more than ten million riders in the US.

Despite some troubling incidents, Waymo asserted that statistics demonstrated that cars driven by people were involved in accidents that hurt people on foot significantly more frequently than its self-driving vehicles.
